KANCHANPUR DISTRICT

After the abolishment of bonded labour Kamaiyas by His Majesty Government of Nepal in July 2000, 'Freed Kamaiya Food Security Project' (FKFSP) came into existence in order to fulfill the need and demand of released Kamaiyas in Kanchanpur. FKFSP was initiated and started in January 2001 as a component of 'Rural community Infrastructure work (RCIW) Program. The main project partners on national level are the Ministry of Local Development (MLD), the World Food Program (WFP) and German Agency for Technical Co-Operation (GTZ).

FKFSP is found very effective as this project in capable to fulfill the real need of Kamaiya. The Kamaiyas who were staying in open field are now staying in their own home and few of them have started various occupations for income generation.

From the beginning of FKFSP, 21 nos. of projects are completed or partially and 4 RCIW regular project were there. The no. of FKFSP beneficiaries were 2080 household and from RCIW regular project beneficiaries were 282 Households. The total rice used was 445.298 MT (FKFSP - 380.81 MT & RCIW 64.48 MT). The average rice received by per household was 135.32 kg from FKFSP and 162.03 kg from RCIW regular program. The numbers of workers recorded in project book were 3212(Male 67% and female 33%).
