BARDIYA DISTRICT

The Kamaiya or bonded agricultural labour system traditionally prevailed in districts in the western Terai, including Bardiya. Kamaiyas, mostly belonging to the Tharu ethnic group, were freed on 17th July 2000, after the Government of Nepal abolished the system. Since then many landlords have forced the Kamaiyas to leave their homesteads. However, the number of freed Kamaiyas moving to the camps for shelter was minimal.

Freed Kamaiya Food Security Project (FKFSP) started under the guideline of "RCIW"- with an overall development goal to improve the livelihood of freed Kamaiyas. Selection of FKFSP projects are done based on the number of freed Kamaiyas it covers - in terms of providing short-term employment and food security to them.

In accordance with RCIW guidelines, the thrust was to address the freed Kamaiyas with the creation of employment opportunity at project level.
